Gallery Policy

Dowle Fine Art aims to make artworks by leading 18th- and 19th-century British artists more accessible. Unlike many art dealers, we provide clear price points to allow customers to make an immediate informed decision. Furthermore, the exclusively online gallery keeps outgoings low, allowing us to provide very competitive prices for highly desirable works.

We offer free UK delivery with a fully tracked and insured service. We provide estimates for EU postage, and will offer an accurate quote for any other destinations.

Each item's description includes the dimensions of the picture itself and not that of the mount or frame. There are multiple photographs for each artwork, showing the mounts and frames. If you require the full measurements before purchasing, please contact us.

Images and condition reports

Dowle Fine Art provide various photographs for each individual picture to give you the best insight into the condition of the work. If you require any further images please contact us and we would be happy to provide these.

Each artwork has been carefully sourced and we try to provide works in the best condition they can be in. However, many of our pictures are over 200 years old and inevitably some may show some time fading, foxing or other markings. Additionally, the condition of the frames and mounts for each picture can vary. Many are in their original frames which can be fragile and have chips on them. Some of the mounts may have foxing and we make this obvious when this is the case. Where possible we have taken these works to our restorer. We aim to be as honest as possible in describing our works and the photographs help in this process. We suggest you contacting us before purchasing a picture if you have any questions about its condition.

Please note, Dowle Fine Art owns the copyright for all photographs on this website and any further pictures enquired for by customers. Each picture was photographed with as much natural light as possible with no further editing.

Attributions

Dowle Fine Art follows the leading auction houses in describing the authenticity of each artwork we sell and have followed the terms that Christie's use. If a picture is described with name of the artist without any qualification (which is the majority of the art we sell) then that work is in our opinion fully by the artist in question. In other cases we use the following expressions:

  • 'Attributed to': in our opinion, this artwork is probably by the artist but not with complete certainty.

  • 'Studio of': in our opinion, this artwork was completed in the studio of the artist, possibly under their supervision.

  • 'Follower of': in our opinion, this artwork was completed in the artist's style but probably not by a pupil.

  • 'Circle of': in our opinion, this artwork is of the same period as the artist and shows their influence. It is possibly by a pupil of the artist.

  • 'Manner of: in our opinion this artwork is completed in the style of the artist but done at a later date.

  • 'After': in our opinion, this artwork is a copy of any date of work of the artist.
