18th Century English School - Sicilian Landscape c.1790
This interesting watercolour was taken from an album that included various views of Sicily from c.1790. It makes it likely that this work also depicted the same landscape. If the artist was from Britain then it may have been drawn even earlier due to the events unfolding in France from 1789 with their Revolution. The artist is clearly accomplished as they have attempted the scratching out technique to highlight areas of their work in white. An angler is seen perched on one of the nearest rocks and a small sailing boat is drifting on the otherside of the composition. There appears to be an expanse of water to the far left which could indicate the open sea or a perhaps a lake that the vessel has ventured from.
