Alfred Edward Chalon R.A. (1780-1860) - Two Gentlemen and an Old Lady Caricature
A typical caricature by Alfred Edward Chalon who has depicted two gentlemen trying to eavesdrop on an elderly lady who is sat with her dog. The Victoria and Albert Museum have various other examples of his caricature work, mostly linked to the opera scene of early Victorian England. Most likely, Chalon was part of the Sketching Society (1799-1851) when he drew this picture. This club was important in the rise of the professionalisation of watercolour.
