Alfred Gomersal Vickers (1810-1837) - In the grounds of an Oxford College
  • Alfred Gomersal Vickers (1810-1837) - In the grounds of an Oxford College

Alfred Gomersal Vickers (1810-1837) was the son and pupil of the artist Alfred Vickers (1786-1868). He was also a follower of the artists François Louis Thomas Francia and Richard Parkes Bonington, his style was often close to their work. 'Vickers exhibited from 1827, and in 1833 he was sent to Russia by Charles Heath to make drawings for the Annuals. These were engraved in 1836. His remaining works were sold at Christie's, 16 February 1837.' [1]

Our watercolour depicts the grounds of an Oxford University College which possibly is Magdalen College c.1831. It has a strongly similarity to the style of Bonington and William Callow from this period. This work was sold through the Albany Gallery and has excellent provenance.

Medium: watercolour with scratching out, 13.7 x 18cm, framed.

Provenance: Albany Gallery, 1 Bury Street, St James's, London (label verso).

Condition report: generally very good for its age. There is a small amount of very faint foxing in the sky when viewed up close. The frame shows some wear.
