Att. Clarkson Stanfield R.A. (1793-1867) - Tronsberg/Trostberg, Germany
  • Att. Clarkson Stanfield R.A. (1793-1867) - Tronsberg/Trostberg, Germany

This impressive work depicts the Bavarian town of Trostberg. Stanfield was employed by Charles Heath to create pictures that could be used for his Picturesque Annuals between 1832 and 1834. This watercolour corresponds to a work labelled 'Tronsberg' and was used in the 1832 Annual. This book covered Northern Italy, the Tyrol and places along the Rhine. The spectacular backdrop of the Alps helps to frame the scenery that belongs to this ancient town.

We have attributed this work purely because it has not been signed and it includes an erroneous label on the mount of 'William Clarkson Stanfield'. He was never known by this name but this seems to be a common mistake by many dealers and auction houses. The quality of the watercolour certainly suggests the hand of Stanfield. The close up photographs help to show the level of detail and use of bodycolour which is synonymous with the artist's work. We have dealt with various paintings by Stanfield and are confident this work is very likely by him.
