Clarkson Stanfield R.A. (1793-1867) - Landscape with waterfall
This intriguing and well drawn watercolour by Stanfield depicts a tranquil scene of a waterfall in a highly vegetated landscape. It may be a study from one of his tours in the English or Welsh countryside. It is similar to a work we currently have for sale by Cornelius Varley that likely was from the artist's Welsh tour in 1803 or 1805. Both artists also were in the Sketching Society (1799-1851) but their membership did not overlap.
Our watercolour shows Stanfield's skill at painting moving water and also as a landscape artist. This work has excellent provenance with an Abbott & Holder label verso and an inscription for Agnews showing it was likely in their stock in the past. The picture has recently been remounted and has Artglass which is an anti-reflective museum glass.
Medium: watercolour with bodycolour and scratching out, 30.4 x 36.3cm, framed with Artglass AR 70.
Provenance: likely Agnews, stock no: MF53; Abbott & Holder (label verso).
