Clarkson Stanfield R.A. (1793-1867) - Off the Needles
An early example of Stanfield's skill in marine painting. This work depicts a British naval vessel sailing off the Needles. It was sold in the artist's studio sale and has recently been reframed with museum glass.

Provenance: Stanfield's Studio sale, 8th May 1868, Christie, Manson & Woods, Lot 270; purchased by Mr. Robert Marriott, Grants Temperance Hotel, Smithy Door, Manchester (label verso).
Condition report: time staining and wear obvious throughout the watercolour, please see photographs.
