Copley Fielding (1787-1855) - Scottish Landscape with figures on Hillside Track
  • Copley Fielding (1787-1855) - Scottish Landscape with figures on Hillside Track

A superb Scottish landscape by the artist Anthony Vandyke Copley Fielding. This example shows Fielding at his best and is likely drawn earlier in his career. The tree on the right frames the picture as an almost Italianate Cappricio. It is reminiscent of works by Paul Sandby. The figures on the hillside are deep in conversation. In the distance is a town and an expanse of water which could either be the sea or a loch.

This picture was in the prestigous collection of the Birket Houses. It was sold at Bonhams in 1984 and this catalogue will be included with the picture (see photos).

Medium: watercolour on paper, 23 x 30.5cm, signed l.l. 'Copley Fielding', framed.

Provenance: Birket Houses, Cumbria; Bonhams Sale 'The contents of Birket Houses', 1/11/84, lot 278.

Condition report: generally in very good condition. There is a small amount of time staining and a very small tear on the left hand-side of the watercolour (please see photos). This is not obvious unless viewed very closely. The frame shows a small amount of wear and there are a few small markings on the mount.
