David Cox O.W.S. (1783-1859) - Two en plein air landscape studies
  • David Cox O.W.S. (1783-1859) - Two en plein air landscape studies

A fascinating pair of two en plein air landscape studies by David Cox. The drawings are painted both recto and verso and appear to be of the same location. One drawing includes a white cottage with trees close by, whereas the other does not have any building. The landscape appears to be the same in both works, suggesting Cox is experimenting with how he wanted to portray the composition. The artist has used broad brushstrokes and pencil outlines to help to frame the picture.

Medium: watercolour and pencil on paper (painted on both sides), 36.4 x 19 cm each, mounted. Note, both works are in one mount, with the watercolours visible on the front and the reverse through a window mount.

Provenance: Collection of Bill Thompson (Albany Gallery).
