  • English School c.1830 - British Royal Engineers Engraving with hand-colouring

This interesting sideways depiction of a British Royal Engineer c.1830 shows the similarity of their early uniform to the traditional redcoats of the British Army. The gentleman even is wearing the generally hated leatherneck stock that was prevalent in the Army during this period of history. Although the artist of this work is as yet unidentified and the publisher unknown, it is an important early portrayal of the Royal Engineers not long after the Napoleonic Wars.

Medium: engraving on paper with hand-colouring, 27.3 x 19.3 cm, framed.

Provenance: The Parker Gallery (2 Albermarle Street, London) - label affixed verso.

Condition report: there is a white patch at the top of the engraving which is probably from a previous mount. Some time staining obvious due to the age of the print.
