John Samuel Hayward (1778-1822) - Devon and Cornwall tour (3 Sketches)
John Samuel Hayward toured Devon and Cornwall in 1807 and it is likely these sketches were drawn during this trip. The large hulks in one depiction suggest this could have been Plymouth or another coastal town with a large enough harbour such as Falmouth or Penzance. An exhibition on Hayward by the Manning Gallery in 1974 has many examples from these locations which are a similar size. Any drawings by this important amateur artist are rare and considering this includes three from the same sketch book and tour makes this an important set of examples.
