John Varley Jnr (1850-1933) - Italian Landscape with Church
  • John Varley Jnr (1850-1933) - Italian Landscape with Church

John Varley Junior was the grandson of the famous watercolourist of the same name, John Varley (1778-1842). Varley Jnr.'s father was Albert Fleetwood (1804-1876) who also trained to become a professional artist and exhibited regularly at the Royal Academy. Albert later became a drawing teacher which is probably how Varley Jnr learnt his trade. The grandson travelled widely in the East and his watercolours of Egypt, India and Japan are highly sought after today. He also spent time in Italy which is when this watercolour must have been drawn. Varley Jnr. exhibited regularly at the Royal Academy between 1876-95 which seems to have been his most prolific period.
