John White Abbott (1763-1851) - A Devon Mill
  • John White Abbott (1763-1851) - A Devon Mill

A delicately drawn study of a Devon Mill by John White Abbott. This work is very much in the style of his drawing master, Francis Towne. Although an amateur artist, White Abbott regularly exhibited at the Royal Academy between 1795 and 1805. His works were generally kept by his family and he did not sell his pictures. White Abbott lived in Exeter and worked as a surgeon, many of his watercolours and drawings are from his home county of Devon.

Medium: Pen and ink and watercolour on paper, 15 x 22 cm, framed.

Provenance: Sotheby's 'Eighteenth and Nineteenth Century British Drawings and Watercolours', 11th November 1993, lot 92; Collection of R.H. Nicholson.

Condition report: generally very good. There is some time staining to the edge of the watercolour, probably from a previous mount. There are a couple of small dot marks in the sky.
