Joshua Cristall (1767-1847) - Portrait of Young Girl, Bethgellert, North Wales
The pastoral lands of Wales always appealed to Cristall and he returned there at various points in his career. This charming sketch comes from a tour in 1831 with his wife to Caernarvonshire. The likely location is Beddgelert which is near to Snowdonia. A similar example sketch from the same tour was sold at Abbott & Holder recently and the Tate Britain have a drawing of 'Near Bethgellert' which is also dated 1831.
Medium: Pencil on paper.
Signed lower left 'Joshua Cristall 1831' and inscribed lower right 'at Bethgellert', 30 x 20 cm, framed.
