Noel Laura Nisbet (1887-1956) - Biblical study, Descent from the Cross
Noel Laura Nisbet was the daughter of Hume Nisbet (1849-1923) who was a Scottish-born novelist and artist. He trained under the watercolourist Sam Bough. Noel Laura 'trained at South Kensington and painted large watercolours, which show a kinship to Jessie M. King's in subject matter. She was also a black and white artist, and she married the painter Henry Bush.' [1]
Our pen and ink drawing appears to be a study for a larger work by Nisbet. The artist painted various historical, mythological and biblical scenes. It could be a drawing of Christ's body being taken down from the Cross which has always been an emotional and heavily depicted image in the art world.
Medium: pen and ink on paper, 10.8 x 13.8cm, framed.
