A depiction of an early naval battle involving English warships which suggests this was before the Union with Scotland (1701). Reminiscent of various naval boats painted by Willem van de Velde the Younger. Norman Wilkinson was known to draw past sea battles and a recent example of the 'Battle of Flores 1591' showing the last fight of HMS Revenge was sold at Christie's in 2012. This drawing shares many similarities with this work.
