Paul Sandby Munn O.W.S. (1773-1845) - Country Figures with a Horse and Cart
  • Paul Sandby Munn O.W.S. (1773-1845) - Country Figures with a Horse and Cart

Paul Sandby Munn was the godson and pupil of the eminent watercolourist and namesake Paul Sandby. Munn had a similar style to Sandby and also chose to specialise in watercolour painting. He was heavily involved in the the creation of the Old Watercolour Society (now known as the RWS) and was a pioneering member of Sketching Society (1799-1851) where he was a member of each of the three variations of the group. His pupil Francis Stevens was furthermore involved in the Chalon Sketching Society.

Munn travelled widely across England and Wales in search of inspiration and this watercolour certainly was created on one of these trips. A similar picture was sold by Sotheby's in 2007 (https://www.sothebys.com/en/auctions/ecatalogue/lot.220.html/2007/british-watercolours-l07170) and depicted a farmhouse that was traditionally identified as being located in Keskadale in Cumbria. It was drawn in 1798 and shows a stylistic similarity with our drawing which would help to date it to around 1800. Although the location is still unknown.
