Paul Sandby R.A. (1731-1809) - The Gentle Shepherd 1758 etching
  • Paul Sandby R.A. (1731-1809) - The Gentle Shepherd 1758 etching

Paul Sandby is primarily remembered for his landscape watercolours of Britain and in particular his extensive pictures of Windsor Castle and his estates. He was also a prolific printmaker especially early in his career. Ann Gunn's 2015 book 'The Prints of Paul Sandby (1731-1809): A Catalogue Raisonné' provides an extensive coverage of his many works including this etching which comes from a short series he did on 'The Gentle Shepherd' to illustrate Allan Ramsay's work on it. Ramsay died in 1758 and Sandby perhaps did these etchings as a memorial for his friend (p.154). This etching illustrates Roger and Jenny from the verses:

    Jenny pretends an errand hame,

    Young Roger draps the rest,

To whisper out his melting flame,

    And thow his lassie's breast.

Behind a bush, well hid frae sight, they meet:

See Jenny's laughing; Roger's like to greet.

    Poor Shepherd!
