Peter De Wint (1784-1849) - Five Sketches including Lincoln Cathedral
This fascinating set of five sketches by Peter De Wint comes with excellent provenance. They were in the collection of the Art Historian Sir Robert Witt who was a co-founder of the Courtauld Institute of Art in London. Recently, they were sold at a Christie's sale in 2011. Each work is mounted and they come in a folder that is marked 'John Fleming' which includes labels from the Christie's sale. The drawings have various numbers inscribed on them which perhaps indicates their position in De Wint's sketchbooks or were part of a numbering system the artist used.
The five sketches include:
(1) Lowther Park. Inscribed 'Lowther Church' (lower right) with the number '6' (upper right) and further numbered '50' verso. Pencil on paper, 12.2 x 23.4cm , mounted.
(2) Trees in a landscape. Inscribed and numbered '24' (upper right). Black and white chalk on blue paper, 12.3 x 22.8 cm, mounted.
(3) Travellers on the road to Askham. Inscribed 'The Road to Askham' (lower right) and numbered '4' (upper right) and further numbered '48' (verso). Pencil on paper, 12.4 x 23.3 cm, mounted.
