Plate 97 Tomb of Aaron, summit of Mount Hor - After David Roberts Hand Coloured
Aaron was a high priest of the Jewish people and the brother of Moses. After Aaron's death he was buried at the summit of Mount Hor which is the scene for David Roberts' lithograph. There is an account of Aaron's buriel in the Old Testament book of Numbers in Chapter 20. Mount Hor is located close to Petra and is in modern day Jordan. Roberts was on his way to Jerusalem through Jordan to witness Easter in the Holy City. He had arrived in the Middle East the previous year in Alexandria to start his tour.
The drawings and watercolours from this sketching trip by David Roberts of the Holy Land and Egypt were collated together into folios and released over a seven year period by the publisher F.G.
