Richard Simkin - The 92nd, Gordon Highlanders at the Battle of Quatre Bras 1815
  • Richard Simkin - The 92nd, Gordon Highlanders at the Battle of Quatre Bras 1815

The 92nd Gordon Highlanders played an important role in the Napoleonic Wars and particularly at the Battle of Waterloo. This magnificent watercolour by Richard Simkin shows their defence of the crossroads at the Battle of Quatre Bras on the 16th June 1815 against the bayonet charging French troops. This important event occurred two days before the Battle of Waterloo which the Gordon Highlanders were also involved in. They were ordered to charge the leading French column and managed to cause them to break in complete disorder.

Simkin, although known for his small-scale studies of the different infantry and calvary regiments in the British Army, was also very skilled at creating compositions of important British military events, such as this depiction of the Battle of Quatre Bras.
