Samuel Austin A.O.W.S. (1796-1834) - An Old Mill
Samuel Austin was elected as an Associate of the Society of Painters in Water-Colours (now known as the RWS) in 1827. He exhibited regularly with the group and also previously at the Society of British Arists between 1824-1826. Austin enjoyed going on sketching trips to the continent and some of his best works are of Dutch and French scenes.
This large intricately detailed watercolour suggests that it was likely an exhibition piece by Austin at the Old Watercolour Society. It comes in a magnificent gilt frame with various inscriptions of the back which may bear further information about the picture. It appears to be an English landscape but easily could have been from one of Austin's continental trips.
Medium: watercolour on paper. 33.5 x 49 cm, framed (please note the frame is fragile).
Provenance: Sotheby's lot 108, 10th July 1997.
