Sawrey Gilpin R.A. (1733-1807) - Shepherds with sheep, cattle, horse and dog
  • Sawrey Gilpin R.A. (1733-1807) - Shepherds with sheep, cattle, horse and dog

Sawrey Gilpin R.A. was the younger brother of the famous Reverend William Gilpin who wrote various works and a treatise on 'the picturesque'. Sawrey Gilpin, although utilising landscape in his landscapes, is primarily known today for his animal paintings of horses and dogs.

This charming sketch shows two shepherds tending their cattle and sheep. One shepherd is riding a horse and the other has his dog next to him. Gilpin most likely witnessed this scene and has cleverly hinted at the movement of the animals. He was elected to the Royal Academy in 1797, from where he exhibited from 1786 until his death.
