Sir Charles Walters D'Oyly (1822-1900) - Above the Ravine, possibly Tivoli
Sir Charles Walters D'Oyly is known today for his military achievements (including becoming Major-General in the Bengal Army and serving the British East India Company) but he was also an accomplished amateur artist. His watercolours from his time in India are particularly sought after.
This watercolour of a ravine shows D'Oyly's skill in the medium and could depict a European or Indian view. It has been suggestd the ravine is depiction of a waterfall at Tivoli.
