  • Sir Charles Walters D'Oyly (1822-1900) - The Fort and Barracks at Lausanne

    Sir Charles Walters D'Oyly is known today for his military achievements (including becoming Major-General in the Bengal Army and serving the British East India Company) but he was also an accomplished amateur artist. His watercolours from his time in India are particularly sought after. 

     

    An interesting composition depicting the Fort and Barracks at Lausanne during a European tour by D'Oyly. This picturesque view shows Lake Geneva in the background and is a detailed drawing by the artist.

     

    Medium: pencil and watercolour on paper, 14.7 x 22.6 cm, framed. Inscribed verso 'Lausanne, Switzerland. The Fort & Barracks'.

     

    Provenance: a private collection with a family link to the artist.
