Thomas Barker of Bath (1769-1847) - Three Pastoral Landscape Figure Studies
  • Thomas Barker of Bath (1769-1847) - Three Pastoral Landscape Figure Studies

A charming set of three pen and ink drawings by the artist Thomas Barker of Bath. They depict various rural characters with a goat, donkey and dog. Barker of Bath focused heavily on country life and landscapes taking his inspiration from Thomas Gainsborough with whom his work is sometimes confused. These sketches were likely ideas for groupings of figures for an oil work.

Medium: pen and ink on paper.

Signed lower left 'T Barker', 20 x 25 cm, framed.

Provenance: Sabin Galleries Limited - Exhibited in 1974.

N.B. The Sabin Galleries Label has an inscription for 'W.E. Elgar 1794' which could be the person Barker of Bath drew the sketches for, or perhaps this was the patron that commissioned him to paint an oil based on these figure compositions.
